Managing Mediterranean Mountain Geoheritage

International Conference

6-7 May 2017, Manteigas, Serra da Estrela, Portugal

Mediterranean mountains are sensitive environments showing a long history of human intervention resulting in complex landuse and mosaics. Climate oscillations since the Tertiary Era, ranging from tropical and mild to cold conditions in glacial periods, left a remarkable imprint in many Mediterranean mountains. The typical irregularity of the Mediterranean climate, marked by a summer dryness and an irregular rainy season, are to be amplified following the main climate scenarios for the next decades, with still poorly evaluated environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Mediterranean mountains host a rich cultural heritage dating from archeological to modern times and many show key geological and geomorphological sites, with high scientific, cultural, pedagogic and scenic values. Such natural assets need to be preserved through holistic and sustainable policies involving the local communities, scientists, stakeholders and policy makers, in order to identify and apply the best-practices for land management.

The Conference on Mediterranean Mountain Management will bring to the Estrela Aspiring Geopark international experts on geoheritage, geotourism and spatial planning to discuss new results on research, applications and best practice and on how to apply them to Mediterranean mountains worldwide. The conference will be an interdisciplinary forum open to local stakeholders and includes a scientific field trip to the main geosites of the serra da Estrela.

Oral and poster presentations on Mediterranean mountains on the following topics, are welcome :

  • Geoheritage as a catalyser of scientific research;
  • Advances in geoheritage: research and applications;
  • Good practices on managing geoheritage;
  • Innovation in mountain tourism and sustainability;
  • Geotourism: success stories;
  • Promoting endogenous products;
  • Empowering women;
  • Education and outreach in the geosciences.

Publication of a special issue of an international journal is under planning. All conference presentations may be submitted for peer-review.
